Historical profile of Chiaiamari’s church

Blessed Virgin Mary of Tears

Chiaiamari’s Church was built by the will and tenacity of the inhabitants of the district, who pledged to support the cost of building and maintaining the house of God, their home. They were simple farmers, inhabitants of the village of Monte San Giovanni Campano, who, working the land in the plain of Chiaiamari, had begun in the last 2 or 3 decades of the eighteenth century, to linger in rudimentary hovels, prepared on rural estates to accomplish more comfortably their farm work, reducing the inconvenience of returning to the village every night, especially in bad seasons. Over time, the stops were dilated up to stabilize the permanence of fifty families. The small town began to feel the discomfort of being without religious assistance and the need to go to town on Sundays and on other holidays.

In the district there was a small cona, a small country chapel, owned by the Trisulti’s Charterhouse, as comes out from an inventory of the properties that dates back to 1591. In a further inventory of 1602 it is still certified, although with the name of Mari Chiaia. The cona was used for the essential church services, usually officiated by priests from Monte San Giovanni Campano. The group of families now ripened the consciousness to establish a real community, and so a priest of the Mount, Don Giuseppe Pellegrini, developed the idea of expanding the old conaand realizing, therefore, a true church, to be made autonomous, able to withstand a priest for the everyday spiritual care of the locals.

The new institution was soon the subject of heated debate between Don Pellegrino and Brother Francesco, granciere of Trisulti’s Charterhouse, who, rightly considered the territory of the chapel – together with its inhabitants – his own property, and so he saw those farmer’s incomes disappeared. He feared that the district, because of his poverty, could not bear the costs both of the new church and the rights of the parish of St. Peter of the Arenula of Monte San Giovanni C., within which was included the Granciae itself. In fact, the jurisdiction of the Parish, contending with the Santa Maria of the Arendola, for the dubious boundaries, was the lever used by Don Pellegrini to obtain the bishop’s consent to build the new church in Chiaiamari. On March 27, 1779 the construction of the rural church began, by the stazzaroli of Chiajamari, as named by Brother Francis. While farmers were sweating hard for their church, the contenders of the territorial jurisdiction provided a lot of documents in defence of their reasons, declared as pastoral care, but slightly tinged with economic interests. Don Pellegrini, however, insisted on reasons related to the distance from the Mount: “When you come from that country to Mount St. Giovanni and from it to Chiajamari’s land, you must pass two ditches, ie Fontana Murata and Reditoto. For the flow received by those ditches, sometimes in Winter, it isn’t possible to pass them, especially for old and young, who, if they come to this earth to hear Mass, when those ditches were in flood, they could not pass, not only because of the difficulty of passing these ditches, but again because, in the winter time, the roads aren’t practicable for everyone.

For that they should suffer the misfortune of not being able to hear Mass in this season. " . The conflict was finally resolved with the agreement between the Bishop of Veroli, Giovanni BattistaIacobini and the Prior of Trisulti Don Paul Peter Bedini. It was determined that the territory of the country church was attributable to the patronage of the Charterhouse (then, the parish of St. Peter of the Arenula), it would have been annexed to the same Charterhouse, under the title of Our Holy Lady of Chiajamari. It is noted that since the end of the XVII century, on the back wall of the primitive cona, an image of the Madonna Pieta, painted by the Neapolitan painter Francesco Frezzi, showed the devotion of the faithful.

In 1781the families of Chiaiamari formed themselves into an independent moral corporation for the carrying on of works, the maintenance of its institution to the worship and the right of choice of chaplain, since the Charterhouse itself considered construction costs excessive. The congregation, formed by all the inhabitants, headed by an elected Prior, also provided to adopt formal laws, including 14 "chapters about the erection, and Establishment of New Rural Church under the invocation of Our Holy Lady of Chiaiamari district in the territory of Monte San Giovanni. ".The act of constitution was drawn up in the Church on December 31, 1781 and signed by some 47 heads of households (out of 50 who lived there). So the farmers claimed their exclusive right to the church they built. Works continues for decades, with the addition of walls and furniture according to the possibilities, with the aim of enhancing the beauty and functionality.

In the pastoral visit of 1824, Bishop Francis Cipriani noted the incompleteness of the factory, but at the same time "The church, dedicated to the Blessed Dolorous Virgin currently of the Bitter Tears ,belongs to the peasants who live in this town, (or  district), and to whom the obligation of its maintenance, has approved all the individual things necessary for the celebration of Mass ... ".

The same bishop in his pastoral visit in 1838, prescribed the construction of the Sacristy "for the convenience of the chaplain and the conservation of church ornaments ..." In 1856 the General Assembly consists of the heads of families and deliberated the beginning of the works, with the economic burden to the community, also “with the condition that each lends his work for free for one day for the transport of stones, or works in the factory ..." However, works for the construction of the vestry, had real impetus only in 1873. Still, even among the various works of restoration, in 1970 the flat was built on the second floor and a small bell-tower was erected. Finally, in the nineties of the twentieth century, a few tens of meters from the church, the building of the Parish House crowns the church complex.

It was in the sixties of the Twentieth century when the change of socio-economic conditions of the village of Monte San Giovanni Campano, the admitted distance of Church from other existing in the Municipality, the demographic increasing in the district of Chiaiamari gave the effect of getting the 'autonomy of the Church, with its erection as a parish by the Bishop of Veroli, Luigi Morstabilini, by his decree of April 1, 1964. He settled there, also, the title "Blessed Virgin Mary of Tears" and circumscribed its boundaries: Chiaiamari - ColleZoppo - Casanova - Sione - ColleFranceschino - Fontana Murata - ColleScaglione - S. Elijah - Fraduemonti - Mastrazze. On 9th February 1965, the Decree n. 160, the President of the Republic Giuseppe Saragatrecognized all the civil effects of the decree of the diocesan in Veroli.

The priest, the first chaplain Church was Don Joseph Pellegrini, the last, Don Armando Raponi.

The first parish priest of the parish was, for 59 years, Don Armando Raponi.

From 6 February 2011 and currently in service, the second parish priest, DonWilfrid Bikouta.
